Seacon Production

Seacon Production is a leader in fish products. When the company also started working with cod, it had to invest in saws. Safety was an important requirement. IB Food-Machines helped with this.

“With IB Food-Machines we have had a very pleasant cooperation for fifteen years. They have supplied us with an extremely safe BladeStop band saw, which also meets all food safety and reliability requirements.

What is Seacon looking for?

Due to a decline in the share of North Sea fish, Seacon must look for an alternative: sea-frozen cod. However, these frozen cod must first be sawn. Pieter Gerssen, responsible for purchasing and planning, was initially a bit apprehensive about this. After all, the company had to invest in sawing machines and make sure that the personnel ran as little risk as possible.

Another factor is that the Occupational Health and Safety Service (Arbodienst) is carrying out more and more unexpected checks, precisely because there are safer saws on the market. Fines for unsafe situations and accidents that cause permanent injury result in high costs. But in the end Gerssen’s main concern is the welfare of his staff: “You can’t ask people to work with an unsafe saw. Employees are capital. You have to take care of them.”

Seacon therefore decided to put this question to IB Food-Machines, with whom it had been cooperating for some fifteen years for other machines. A contributing factor: both organizations are based in Urk, so the distance is literally and figuratively small.

What solution does IB Food-Machines offer?

IB Food-Machines recommends working with the BladeStop system. This safety system meets all food safety and reliability requirements. Moreover, it is specifically suitable for cutting fillet. BladeStop is special because it has a double detection capability. If the employee’s hand comes too close, the saw stops within milliseconds.

As Seacon and IB Food-Machine make these preparations together, confidence also rises among the workforce. Rafael Wojtasinski, Seacon’s chief sawing officer, says his team members have seen sawing accidents at previous employers. BladeStop eliminates those fears. Wojtasinski says that has an added benefit: “Because the workers are not afraid, the production rate goes up. This is purely because they can fully rely on the machines.”

How is the collaboration going?

IB Food-Machines’ team makes every effort to provide the best possible service to Seacon. As carefully as the production company deals with its employees, IB Food-Machines wants to deal with its customer. De Vries: “We know that production must not come to a standstill and we handle everything as quickly as possible. That’s why we have most parts in stock.”

Teun ten Napel, who is responsible for Seacon’s engineering projects, has found that BladeStop adds complexity to sawing machines. “With this kind of machinery, good support is essential,” he says. He is satisfied with the support provided by IB Food-Machines: “They have helped us tremendously with this. They respond very quickly. The lines are short and any problems are fixed quickly.”
